AI Product Updates Daily — May 20, 2026 (Evening Edition)
Andrej Karpathy joins Anthropic to lead Claude pre-training. Bristol Myers Squibb deploys Claude Enterprise to 30,000 employees. Grok Skills lands persistent cross-session memory. GitHub Copilot on web drops Gemini and legacy GPT models. WordPress 7.0 ships a native AI infrastructure layer. Google's developer keynote and Marketing Live round out the I/O announcements with Antigravity 2.0, WebMCP, Universal Cart, and Ask Advisor.
Google I/O's developer keynote and Marketing Live filled in the afternoon, Andrej Karpathy confirmed a move to Anthropic, BMS put Claude in front of 30,000 pharma employees, Grok got persistent memory, GitHub Copilot quietly dropped Gemini from its web interface, and WordPress shipped a native AI infrastructure layer. Here is every notable update from the second half of the day.
Anthropic
Andrej Karpathy joins to lead Claude pre-training
Karpathy — OpenAI co-founder, former Tesla AI director, and founder of education startup Eureka Labs — announced on May 19 that he is joining Anthropic's pre-training team. 1
His specific role is to build a sub-team focused on using Claude to accelerate pre-training research itself. In his announcement he said: "I think the next few years at the frontier of LLMs will be especially formative. I am very excited to join the team here and get back to R&D."
The hire signals that Anthropic is doubling down on the model layer rather than ceding ground to application-layer competition, and that OpenAI is no longer the default landing spot for departing OpenAI alumni. Karpathy's former colleagues have spread across SSI (Sutskever), Thinking Machines (Murati), and now Anthropic.
- Releasing entity: Anthropic
- Announced: May 19, 2026
- Availability: Internal hire; no new model release tied to this announcement
Bristol Myers Squibb deploys Claude Enterprise to 30,000 employees
BMS and Anthropic announced a strategic agreement on May 20 to make Claude Enterprise the shared intelligence platform across BMS's global operations, covering research and development, manufacturing, clinical development, and commercial functions. 2 3
More than 30,000 BMS employees will have access to Claude's advanced reasoning and agentic capabilities. The stated goal is faster drug R&D cycles and streamlined global workflows.
- Releasing entity: Anthropic / Bristol Myers Squibb
- Date: May 20, 2026
- Scope: Enterprise-wide deployment, 30,000+ employees
- Availability: Enterprise agreement; not a public product change
Tenable partners with Anthropic for AI-driven exposure management
Tenable announced a partnership with Anthropic to integrate Claude into Tenable Hexa AI, the company's exposure management product. The integration targets faster cyber risk prioritization and remediation workflows. Anthropic will also join Tenable's EXPOSURE 2026 conference to discuss frontier AI in cybersecurity. 4
- Date: May 20, 2026
- Availability: Integration within Tenable Hexa AI; GA timing not specified
Claude Code Security and CodeMender enter limited-access competition
Google expanded testing of CodeMender — its DeepMind-built AI cybersecurity agent — to selected expert users via API, on the same day that reports confirmed Anthropic has a comparable limited-access tool called Claude Code Security. Both tools locate vulnerabilities, trace root causes, and draft patches; both require human review before any patch is applied. 5
CodeMender combines Gemini Deep Think with static analysis, dynamic analysis, differential testing, fuzzing, and SMT solvers. The expanded API program allows approved testers to plug CodeMender into existing engineering and security pipelines rather than using it as a standalone chat interface.
Neither product is in public GA; access strategy is currently as significant a differentiator as model capability.
xAI / Grok
Grok Skills: persistent cross-session memory on Grok 4.3
xAI launched Grok Skills on May 18 — persistent, cross-session memory that users can define once and have Grok apply automatically across all future conversations. Skills can encode formatting rules, workflow steps, or documentation styles. Every account ships with built-in Skills from xAI; custom Skills can be created in seconds. 6
- Releasing entity: xAI
- Date: May 18, 2026
- Availability: GA across web, iOS, and Android on Grok 4.3
Grok Build commits to daily release notes
Elon Musk confirmed on May 20 that xAI will publish daily release notes for Grok Build, its early-access coding agent and CLI tool launched May 14. The first daily note, posted by developer skcd and retweeted by Musk, covered two bug fixes: ReadTool blocks copying only the path, and stderr redirected to
/dev/null to fix TUI text interleaving. 7The daily cadence replaces the previous rhythm of roughly two meaningful updates per week.
- Releasing entity: xAI
- Date: May 20, 2026
- Availability: Grok Build is in early beta, exclusive to SuperGrok Heavy subscribers at $300/month
Developer Keynote: Antigravity 2.0, WebMCP, and Android migration agent
Google's I/O 2026 Developer Keynote (held May 19–20) delivered several developer-facing announcements not covered in the main I/O keynote: 8

Google Marketing Live 2026: Universal Cart, Ask Advisor, and UCP expansion
Held concurrently with I/O, Google Marketing Live 2026 focused on turning Gemini into the operating layer for advertising, commerce, and measurement. Key announcements: 9
Commerce and checkout
- Universal Cart expands the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) with AI-assisted checkout flows, buy-now-pay-later integrations with Klarna and Affirm, and cross-retailer shopping experiences. UCP also now reaches into Demand Gen campaigns, YouTube Shopping ads, and AI Mode.
Advertising
- Ask Advisor — a new Gemini-powered assistant that connects Google Ads, Analytics, Merchant Center, and Google Marketing Platform into a single collaborator capable of building campaigns, analyzing performance, and automating operational tasks.
- Asset Studio gets Gemini Omni for video workflows, plus 1-Click Creative Testing.
- New Gemini-powered ad formats for AI Mode: Conversational Discovery ads, Highlighted Answers, AI-powered Shopping ads, and Business Agent for Leads.
Measurement
- Meridian — Google's open-source marketing mix model — is now integrated directly into Google Analytics 360.
- Qualified Future Conversions (QFCs): a new predictive reporting metric inside Analytics 360, powered by Gemini, connecting current ad activity to future revenue signals.
Merchant Center gains AI Performance Insights, Conversational Attributes, and Ask Advisor integration to help retailers optimize product descriptions for conversational shopping across Search, Gemini, and AI Mode.
GitHub
Copilot on web drops Gemini, GPT-5.2 Codex, and GPT-5.4 nano
GitHub updated the model selection in Copilot Chat on the web on May 20, removing all Gemini models, GPT-5.2 Codex, GPT-5.4 nano, and several other models. The stated reason is delivering more consistent, high-quality responses by narrowing the selection to models with stronger demonstrated performance. 10
All OpenAI models and Claude models remain available across Copilot tiers. Going forward, GitHub says Copilot Chat on web will introduce fewer new models, prioritizing proven performance over breadth.
- Releasing entity: GitHub / Microsoft
- Date: May 20, 2026
- Availability: Live in web Copilot Chat; IDE model selection unaffected
WordPress
WordPress 7.0 ships native AI infrastructure layer
WordPress 7.0 launched on May 20 with three new core APIs that add native AI plumbing without shipping a general-purpose AI assistant: 11
- Connectors API: Site owners configure OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google Gemini credentials once in WordPress admin; the configuration is shared across all plugins. Previously, each AI plugin maintained its own API key management logic.
- WP AI Client: A provider-agnostic API layer for model requests. Plugins call a unified interface rather than maintaining separate SDKs for each provider. Swapping a provider in Connectors settings propagates across all plugins without code changes.
- Abilities API: Standardizes how plugins expose capabilities to AI systems. Each registered ability has a typed input schema, typed output schema, permission annotations, and execution rules (read-only, idempotent, or destructive). An SEO plugin can register
analyze_page_seo; a WooCommerce plugin can expose order lookup — making plugins discoverable by AI workflows rather than isolated admin panels.
This is infrastructure, not a feature. WordPress 7.0 does not ship a general AI assistant or autonomous site agent out of the box.
- Releasing entity: WordPress / Automattic
- Date: May 20, 2026
- Availability: GA in WordPress 7.0
